Imaging services

A radiologist is a physician who specializes in reading medical images and reporting what they show. Below are the common types of studies and what each is used for.

X-ray (radiography)
Quick images of bones, joints, the chest and the abdomen. Often the first study ordered for injuries, cough or pain.
CT (computed tomography)
Detailed cross-sectional images made with X-rays. Used for the head, chest, abdomen, pelvis and blood vessels.
MRI (magnetic resonance imaging)
Images made with a magnetic field and radio waves, with no radiation. Well suited to the brain, spine, joints and soft tissue.
Ultrasound
Real-time images made with sound waves. Used for the abdomen, pelvis, thyroid, blood vessels and pregnancy.
Mammography
Low-dose X-ray imaging of the breast for routine screening and for follow-up of a specific concern.
Fluoroscopy
Moving X-ray images, often with contrast, used to watch swallowing, the digestive tract and joints.
Nuclear medicine
Studies that use a small amount of radioactive tracer to show how organs such as the heart, bones and thyroid are working.
Bone density (DEXA)
A short, low-dose scan that measures bone strength and helps assess the risk of osteoporosis and fracture.

How a radiology report reaches you

Most patients never meet their radiologist. Here is what happens between your scan and your results.

  1. Your provider orders a study

Your doctor or other provider decides which exam fits your symptoms and sends the order to the imaging facility.

  2. A radiologist reads the images

One of our physicians reviews every image, compares it with earlier studies when available, and writes a report.

  3. Your provider shares the results

The report goes to the provider who ordered the exam, who explains the findings and the next steps with you.
